Board Policy 4361.9
Administrative and Supervisory Personnel – Catastrophic Leave Program
This Board Policy applies to all certificated and classified unrepresented supervisory and management employees of the San Francisco Unified School District and the County Office of Education.
Purpose
The Governing Board recognizes that District employees may desire to assist other employees who require a leave of absence as a result of a catastrophic illness or injury but do not have sufficient accrued leave to cover their absence. The Superintendent or designee shall establish a catastrophic leave program by which administrative and supervisory employees may donate accrued vacation and/or sick leave credits for use by eligible employees. (Education Code 44043.5)
For purposes of this policy, catastrophic illness or injury is defined as an illness or injury that is expected to incapacitate the employee, or the employee’s family member, for an extended period of time.
Eligibility
To be eligible to receive donated leave, employees must meet all of the following conditions.
- An employee must require the leave for either:
- the employee’s own catastrophic illness or injury; or
- to care for a family member where the family member’s catastrophic illness or injury requires the employee to take time off from work for an extended period of time.
- The employee has exhausted all sick leave and/or any other paid leave.
- The illness or injury must be certified by the attending physician who verifies that the illness or injury lasts for at least 30 day and totally incapacitates the employee (or their family member).
Employees are prohibited from working while on catastrophic leave.
Donations made under the catastrophic leave program shall be strictly voluntary.
