San Francisco Unified School District and County Office of Education
Board Policy 5112.5
Open/Closed Campus
This Board Policy applies to the San Francisco Unified School District and the County Office of Education.
In order to give high school students an opportunity to demonstrate responsibility, independent judgment, and positive citizenship, the Governing Board authorizes each high school administration to adopt an open campus at their site in which students shall have the privilege of leaving campus during lunch. All elementary and middle schools shall have closed campuses.
The high school principal or designee may establish eligibility requirements for students to leave campus for lunch, such as academic achievement, attendance, and/or grade level.
The District shall send written notification to parents/guardians about the open campus policy at the beginning of the school year along with the parental notification required by Education Code 48980. School sites that have an open campus shall also notify families about any applicable eligibility criteria and shall include the language prescribed by Education Code 44808.5.
(cf. 5145.6 – Parental Notifications)
Students shall not leave school grounds at any other time during the school day without express permission of school authorities. Students who leave school without authorization shall be considered to have an unexcused absence and be subject to disciplinary action.
(cf. 5112.1 – Exemptions from Attendance)
(cf. 5113 – Absences and Excuses)
(cf. 5113.1 – Chronic Absence and Truancy)
(cf. 5113.11 – Attendance Supervision)
(cf. 5113.12 – District School Attendance Review Board)
