– Commissioners Emily M. Murase and Jill Wynns
WHEREAS: In 2009, the Korean War Memorial Foundation, undertook the mission to design
and build a Korean War Memorial in San Francisco, in order to commemorate the sacrifices
made by the nearly 2 million men and women in the U.S. military who fought in the so-called
“Forgotten War,” educate future generations about those sacrifices, and ensure that those
generations never forget the true cost of war and the true price of freedom; and,
WHEREAS: That primary mission was accomplished on August 1, 2016, when the completed
Memorial was officially opened to the public in the Presidio, adjacent to the National Cemetery,
overlooking the Pacific Ocean which Korean war veterans crossed to engage in a historic and
important war that too few are familiar with; and,
WHEREAS: Now that the Memorial is open, efforts are focused on ensuring that future
generations remember the Korean War and those who sacrificed to defend democracy and
protect South Korea’s freedom.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: That the San Francisco Board of Education requests the
Superintendent to encourage
1. San Francisco Unified School District middle school and high school staff and faculty in
history, social science, and related fields, to incorporate curriculum about the Korean
War into their syllabi; and,
2. These staff and faculty as well as SFUSD staff and faculty at elementary schools to
organize field trips to the Korean War Memorial as part of this curriculum; and
3. Interested staff and faculty to participate in the National Council of Social Studies teacher
training on the Korean War scheduled for June 2017 at the Marines Memorial Club in
San Francisco; and apply for the program that will fund 20 teachers to visit Korea to
