REDRESS IN THE SAN FRANCISCO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT:
HONORING JAPANESE AMERICAN STUDENTS

WHEREAS: In the spring of 1942, an estimated 120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry,
approximately two-thirds American citizens by birth, were forced by
Executed Order 9066 to leave the four Western states of California, Arizona, Oregon, and
Washington for wartime incarceration in desolate internment camps in violation of their
constitutional rights, and
WHEREAS: As a result of the evacuation, all students of Japanese ancestry in San
Francisco were forced to leave school and have their education abruptly
interrupted; and
WHEREAS: These American students were unable to continue their education with
their classes and were forced to go to makeshift schools behind barbed
wire; and
WHEREAS: These Japanese American students were prohibited from graduating with
their classes at various San Francisco high schools.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: That the San Francisco Board of Education
directs the Superintendent to identify those
District’s Japanese American students affected directly by Executive Order 9066; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That the Superintendent will work with
organizations, such as Nikkei in Education and
Japanese American Citizens League – San Francisco Chapter, in completing the search;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That the San Francisco Board of Education
– belatedly award those Japanese American students a
San Francisco Unified School District high school diploma.
