STUDENT PROCLAMATION TO PROTECT AND SAVE CHILDREN FROM GUN VIOLENCE
WHEREAS: On February 14, 2018, an armed former student killed 14 students and 3
educators at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida; and
WHEREAS: The surviving students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School have set
an example of student leadership in their calls for legislative change and student action;
and
WHEREAS: The students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School are behind the
#NeverAgain and #MarchForOurLives.movement_and
WHEREAS: These students have called for a nationwide march and demonstration to
speak out against gun violence on March 24, 2018; and
WHEREAS: SFUSD wishes to take action to prevent and reduce the impact of gun
violence on students; and
WHEREAS: In 2014, the SFUSD Board of Education passed a resolution authored by
Commissioner Matt Haney, titled “In Support of the Prevention of Gun Violence’, which
states that “the SFUSD supports state and local policies to more strictly control who has
access to guns and other weapons”; and
WHEREAS: “in Support of the Prevention of Gun Violence” states that “the SFUSD
encourages schools fo consider holding events, teach-ins, and other activities for both
students and their families in partnership with community organizations relating to the
prevention of gun violence and violence in general”, as well as that “the SFUSD will provide
immediate and appropriate resources and support for students at risk of self-harm or
harming others”; and
WHEREAS: “In Support of the Sandy Hook Promise Say Something application”, students
support San Francisco Unified School District's implementation of the Say Something
application which will teach students, grades 6-12, how to look for warning signs, signals
and threats, especially in social media, of an individual who may be a threat to themselves
or others and to say something to a trusted adult to get help; and
WHEREAS: The incidents of gun violence in schools that have occurred in recent years
are grounds for urgent and immediate action by legislators.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: That the students of the San Francisco Unified School
District proclaim that we stand in solidarity with the students of Marjory Stoneman
Douglas High School in memory of all the lives lost to gun violence in schools in the United
States; and.
FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED: The SFUSD urges students to inform administration or any
school staff about concerns regarding the safety of their campus and that SFUSD
administrators and staff will ensure that these concerns are addressed confidentially and
with urgency; and
WE FURTHER PROCLAIM: That SFUSD supports the efforts of students to conduct on-site
demonstrations of civic activism and lobby legislators regarding action on the issue of gun
violence.
