Please read this message carefully and learn what you can do to support the SFUSD Teachers (UESF) Strike starting on Monday, February 9th. This is the latest information we have. Make sure every SEIU-represented member at your school or worksite is signed up to receive updates by going to https://seiu-sfusd.org/update. Make sure we have your personal cell phone number so we can keep you updated.
Why are the teachers striking?
The District has not made contract proposals which the members of UESF can accept regarding family healthcare, wages, and protections for our immigrant students and families. You can read more at https://wecantwait.info/parents/uesf or https://www.uesf.org.
What should I do or NOT do if I am supporting the strike?
Yesterday you received a “Staff Redeployment Assignment Email”. If you plan to strike you should ignore it.
DO NOT SHOW UP to your deployment site. Instead, join your school’s picket line. If your work location is not at a school site, if you work in the central office or at multiple school sites, please consider joining one of the following picket lines listed here:
- Presidio Middle School, 450 30th Avenue, starting at 8:30 am
- Marina Middle School, 3500 Fillmore Street, starting at 8:30 am
- Rally at Civic Center Secondary School, 727 Golden Gate Avenue, starting at 1 pm
- PLEASE NOTE: the location of the rally has changed.
IF YOU ARE ALSO AN SFUSD PARENT – you can download the learning packets provided by the district, but DO NOT sign the form. Signing the form could extend the strike by giving the District money to pay scabs.
What do I tell my supervisor if they ask if I’m coming in?
You do not have to tell your supervisor your plans to participate in union activity. You can ignore their emails and text messages.
Do I need to tell my supervisor or Red Rover about my strike plans?
By not showing up to your redeployment site, the district will know that you are taking part in labor actions. Let the district mark you absent and change your Red Rover status.
DO NOT LOG INTO Red Rover at all. Currently, you can ONLY select “Unpaid Labor Action”. Let the District figure this out.
Can I call in sick to support the strike?
DO NOT CALL IN SICK if you are striking.
Per our contract, you do not need a doctor’s notes until you have been absent for more than 5 days. However, on Tuesday, the Board of Education gave emergency powers to the Superintendent and those new rules were sent to us via email on Friday. The district is requiring doctor’s notes if you plan to take a sick day during the strike. If you have a scheduled doctor’s appointment or are sick, please be sure to get a doctor’s note to cover you.
If you call in sick and are striking instead, you could be disciplined for misuse of sick time.
What if the strike lasts more than a few days?
No one knows how long the strike could last. However, the stronger we stand together the shorter the strike will be. We will communicate the latest updates as we receive them. For now, please know that schools are closed on Monday and you should join the picket line.
Why should I support the strike? It’s not our strike and what if the teachers don’t join us when we strike?
Crossing this picket line undermines our own contract negotiations which we are currently in. If the district sees unity now, it will be to our advantage in our ongoing negotiations. If too many of us cross, the district is less likely to meet our contract demands.
Also, school administrators represented by the United Administrators Union have a signed contract with the district and they are even planning to join the strike in solidarity. Our union, SEIU 1021, and other unions are striking in solidarity. We must stay united. If and when we go on strike, our union siblings have committed to joining us. We are all in support of each other. We are stronger together. Do not let the district divide us.
How do I support the strike?
Show up to your school site or a site close to your home, wearing your purple gear. Sign in for the picket with the UESF strike captain, who will probably be wearing a red vest.
Most picketing at school sites will take place between 7:45-11 am. Afterwards, please join UESF for a rally at Civic Center Secondary School at 727 Golden Gate. Please note: location has changed since our meeting this morning.
I need an SEIU t-shirt. How can I get SEIU gear?
Letizia, our SEIU union rep, will be at our Union Hall on Monday, February 9th starting at 5 am to help pass out t-shirts, beanies, megaphones, whistles and signs. Come and pick up supplies if you need them.
Union Hall address is 350 Rhode Island but our offices are around the back, across from 380 Kansas Street. Please knock on the plate glass windows to the right of the double glass doors and you will be let in.
Who can I contact if I need support with picketing?
Does your picket line need water or other supplies? Please text 510-501-1729 to coordinate.
