It’s been an honor to serve as your chapter president these last four years, and it was a real treat to cap things off with a fun holiday party and meet and greet with our awesome new School Board and Board of Supervisors members last night. As I step down, I want to take a minute to appreciate our hardworking leaders, members, and activists who serve the kids of San Francisco day in and day out. Whether you keep our schools clean and safe, organize internal operations, directly serve families in our school offices, make sure our kids don’t go hungry, or keep the public informed and engaged at our radio station, I am proud to stand beside you and be part of your union.

I’m also excited to see what comes next. In my role as a steward, I’ll be working on special projects and helping out members with day-to-day worksite issues under the leadership of Anthony Mills, our Chief Steward. Anthony is a fierce advocate for a fair and equitable workplace.

Rafael Picazo will be steering the ship this year, applying the wisdom of his 3 decades of SFUSD experience and leadership to the needs of our members. I have had the pleasure of working with Rafael on the leadership team since I was elected chapter president, and his deep knowledge of District operations has been immensely helpful to the work we’ve done.

I’m also pleased to report that Lorraine Bowser will continue to represent us on the SEIU 1021 Executive Board and be a champion there for the needs of schools workers. Lorraine has been fighting the good fight for our cafeteria workers and others as a member of the bargaining team for 25 年份.

We are lucky to have such strong leaders to support the work of our members. I hope you will consider stepping up at your worksite in the coming year to help us build our support network across the District. We’ll have officer and bargaining team elections later this year, and we’ll be putting together action teams for several special projects. There’s never been a better time to get involved and help lead the fight!

Thank you for your support, hard work, and membership these last four years. I am proud to have had the opportunity to serve. Here’s to a bright future!

See you Wednesday for a Party!

Bring your Freedom Foundation Postcard for an extra raffle ticket Wednesday night, we’ll gather to celebrate a year of major accomplishments. We’ve begun building a new student meals program, won two raises for all of our members and funding for professional development, and elected a great new school board that will fight for better schools for San Francisco Families. We’re also saying goodbye to our field rep, 傑西Tangk, and welcoming Rafael Picazo as our new Chapter President.

Lots of you have probably gotten a postcard from the Freedom Foundation asking you to stop supporting your union. Please bring those postcards to us tomorrow so we can return them and show the anti-union forces that we know how to stick together! As a bonus, when you bring your Freedom Foundation postcard you get an extra ticket for our prize raffle.

If you’re not currently a member of the union, make sure your membership is updated before the party.

I can’t wait to see you Wednesday!

Why Your Membership Matters

In August, SFUSD responded to an information request about our members based on their interpretation of their legal responsibility. As a result, this week, the Freedom Foundation is sending out postcards targeting our members to try and break them off from union solidarity.

Make no mistake, this is an attack on our power at work and at the bargaining table. It’s an attack on our ability to negotiate fair pay and high quality services for the kids and families of San Francisco. We must stand together and tell these right-wing organizations WE ARE UNITED.

Just this year, SEIU 1021 at SFUSD negotiated almost $7 million in raises for our members, additional hours and professional development for clerks and SNS workers, and improvements to work protections and career ladders. That work goes on, but we need each of you to stand together to make real progress.

United in our union, we’ve not only won strong contracts and enforced them but also amplified the voices of working people in our economy and society. So-called “right to work,” funded by the corporate elites and the wealthy 1%, seeks to take away our ability to join together to negotiate a fair return on our work. Ultimately, their goal is to privatize public services and pay bottom-of-the-barrel wages to line their own pockets.

While these are real challenges for us, they’re not insurmountable if we hold firmly to the values that unite us: fairness, freedom, and equal opportunity for everyone to succeed. This moment in our history is calling on all of us, as union members and as members of a social and economic justice movement, to stick together and use our power in numbers.

Stand with us. I believe that we will win.

Welcome New School Board MembersFaauuga Moliga, Gabriela Lopez, Alison Collins

SEIU 1021 member Faauuga Moliga, UESF member Gabriela Lopez, and Families Union leader Alison Collins were elected to the school board this week! Gabriela and Alison will be sworn in to their seats in January, and Faauuga Moliga will continue his term after being appointed by Mayor Breed last month. We’re proud and excited to work with these powerful advocates for our kids. If you see them walking the halls of 555 Franklin or visiting your school, please give them a warm SEIU welcome!

SFUSD Board members Matt Haney and Shamann Walton are joining the SF Board of Supervisors, and Commissioner Emily Murase will be focusing on her advocacy for women and families at the City Commission on the Status of Women. These board members have done great work in the last several years building better and more equitable schools. We wish them the best in their new projects, and know they’ll always keep SFUSD kids in their hearts.

Civil service employees working at least 20 hours per week have long-term disability coverage that activates after 180 calendar days out of work and will replace up to 50% of your lost income, up to $1000 per month.

SFUSD also provides active employees with a term life insurance policy for the duration of your employment; this policy also covers dismemberment and other serious injuries that prevent you from working. 5.5.2.1 details the District’s responsibility for the family of an employee who passes away. Unfortunately, changes in City statutes around employee health coverage limit our ability to extend coverage for families of employees hired after January 8, 2009. The District will proactively reach out to family members to make them aware of all available benefits to help them during their time of need.
